Medan (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government and people will plant 89 million trees across the country ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to be held in Bali on Dec 3-14, a minister said.
"In the run up to the UNFCCC in Bali, 79 million trees will simultaneously be planted on 150 hectares of land across Indonesia on Nov 28, 2007," Forestry Minister MS Kaban said here on Thursday.
The activity would involve all governors, mayors, district heads, subdistrict heads, village heads, police officers and military members as well as local people, he said.
He said the activity was a manifestation of the Indonesian government`s seriousness in helping the world community reduce greenhouse gas emission that would lead to global warming.
"It will also serve as a test case for regional heads` commitment to conserving the environment," he said.
He said Indonesian women would also plant 10 million trees in urban areas on Dec 1. (*)
